WBW #37-Go Native!

August 16, 2007
This month's WBW has been announced and will be hosted by the Dr. himself of Dr. Vino. The idea is to drink a grape that is indigenous to the place where the wine is made. With that caveat to skip the big six of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon if you decide to go hang out in France's native grapes.

This one seems like a great one for me. I should head out to VA wine country and bring back some Norton, one of the only native grapes to the US and native to VA!

The due date this month is September 12, so get out there and find your wine! You can find all the details over at Dr. Vino in this post.

Hope to see everyone participating this month!

Do you think that Zinfandel qualifies? There are some great local wineries (Amador County & Lodi) that make great Zinfandels. I don't know that there are any grapes indigenous to California, though.

Glad you like the theme Sonadora!

Orion - Not to split hairs, but Zinfandel has been traced back to Primitivo from Italy (and maybe even back to Croatia). You can win big bonus points by trying BOTH a zin AND a primitivo!

Winedeb - Not too wonky, I hope. I'm sure any good shop near you will have many such wines. Or perhaps a good wine bar?

    Cheers,

    Tyler

I just read about Virginia wines in The Wine Bible. Are the wines like Serval Blanc (described as a French-American hybrid) and Norton (described as a cross with native American grapes) ones that would qualify for the Wine Tasting Wednesday?

    A flurry of posts!

Orion, I'm going to go with Dr.Vino on his assessment of Zin...I know that one's got a shady past!

Winedeb, perhaps challenging, but should be fun!

Thanks for stopping by Dr.Vino! I went out in search of some Norton today and came back empty-handed, sadly!

Orion, I'm sure Norton counts, I wouldn't be too sure on the Serval though as I've never heard of it. But Dr.Vino did tell Winecast that hyrbids could count....
