The Omnivore's Hundred

September 1, 2008
I've seen this list popping up all over the blogosphere, most recently at McDuff's Food and Wine Trail. I thought about participating earlier this week when I first started seeing it, however, other endeavors got in my way. Today, however, is Labor Day, and my only plans for the day include catching up on my much neglected roaming of the interwebs ;). The idea behind The Omnivore's Hundred list is that you check off all the things you've tried, and cross off the things you would never try! The official rules are:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at Very Good Taste linking to your results.

Here's my list, things I've tried are in bold, italics (because I can't figure out how to strike-through...) are things I wouldn't eat, I put stars next to the things I can't identify, which probably means I haven't eaten them.

hi - I can help with a few of these - and many of the ones you haven't tried will be easy enough to fulfill when you come to California (like #3, #12, #19, #31, #48, #53, and #95 for starters!)

#12 Pho is a delicious Vietnamese soup, sort of a chicken noodle with basil and other condiments that you use to customize the soup. Great on a cold day.

#46 fugu is the sashimi made from that poisonous blowfish. Difficult but I understand not impossible to find in the US. The chef needs to be specially trained and certified to prepare it so that it doesn't kill you.

And blini are those little buckwheat pancakes that are part of a really fancy caviar service.

I can see there are a few things on that list I also will likely never put past my lips!

A cool idea! I have tasted about 75 of the items before, and there are several I would never taste. Thanks.

Glad to see you jump in, Sonadora. Look on the bright side. You've plenty of interesting things left to try. My recommendation: start with Epoisses -- deliciously pungent cheese that's perfect washed down with a little red or white Burgundy. You won't find it at the supermarket but most good cheese mongers should keep it around.

Hey Sonadora, I can help with some of these, and will gladly introduce you to some if you ever make your way out to Michigan.

Lassi is an Indian yogurt-based beverage. Really sweet and super delicious.

Pocky is a Japanese treat, kind of like a very thin crunchy cracker-like breadstick thing dipped in a candy coating. You'll typically find chocolate or strawberry in the States, and you can usually find them in the Japanese section of most major supermarkets.

And I'd recommend at least trying pistachio ice cream sometime. When it's made really well, it doesn't taste like nuts at all!
